Is Low Testosterone Bringing You Down?

Low Testosterone

What are Hormones?

Hormones are powerful messenger molecules that convey essential signals from one part of the body to another, influencing a wide range of physiological processes. For sex hormones like testosterone, these signals activate specific sections of DNA, leading to the synthesis of proteins critical for cellular maintenance, growth, and anti-aging effects.

Low Testosterone & Men's Health

As men age, the natural production of these crucial hormones declines, hampering the body’s ability to maintain itself at a cellular level. Starting in the mid-30s, testosterone levels in males decrease by 1 to 2% annually. This decline is due to several factors, including reduced testosterone production by the testes, increased levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, and elevated stress hormone cortisol, which creates a catabolic state. Additionally, obesity and the conversion of testosterone to estradiol further diminish testosterone levels while increasing estradiol, compounding the issue. Certain medications, such as statins, SSRIs, opioids, and neuroleptics, can also induce low testosterone levels.

Low testosterone can lead to various symptoms, including:

  • Feelings of withdrawal, sadness, anxiety, frustration, and disinterest
  • Depressed mood
  • Decreased libido
  • Lack of energy
  • Diminished strength and endurance
  • Loss of height
  • Decreased enjoyment of life
  • Reduced erectile function
  • Drowsiness after dinner
  • Poor work performance
  • Increased body fat, particularly around the midsection
  • Decreased bone mineral density

Ultimately, the diagnosis of androgen deficiency should be made based on the lab levels of the androgens, and the clinical symptomatology of the patient. Providers should be familiar with the physical signs and symptoms of low testosterone, and provide screening and treatment options to males in need of replacement.
