Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin best known for its role in blood clotting and bone health. It includes several forms, including vitamin K1 and vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is found mainly in green leafy vegetables, while vitamin K2 refers to a group of menaquinones found in certain animal-based and fermented foods. The NIH notes that vitamin K supports blood clotting proteins and bone-related proteins, and that people taking warfarin or similar anticoagulants need consistent vitamin K intake.
In recent years, vitamin K2 has also been studied for possible roles in cancer-related pathways. This research is scientifically interesting, but vitamin K2 is not a cancer treatment and should not be used in place of oncology care.
Vitamin K2 is part of the vitamin K family. It is involved in several biological processes, including activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins.

Because vitamin K is fat-soluble, it is absorbed better when taken with dietary fat.
Some laboratory studies have explored vitamin K2’s potential effects on cancer-related processes, including cell growth, programmed cell death, invasion behavior, and interactions with certain cancer therapies.
These findings are early-stage and should be interpreted carefully. Results from cell studies or small clinical trials do not mean vitamin K2 has been proven to prevent or treat cancer in patients.
One phase II randomized study evaluated sorafenib with or without vitamin K treatment in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The study reported improved response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival in the combination group.
While these findings are notable, they do not establish vitamin K2 as a standard cancer treatment. More research is needed to understand which patients may benefit, what dosing is appropriate, and how vitamin K2 may interact with cancer therapies.
Vitamin K can interact with certain anticoagulant medications, especially warfarin. Patients taking blood thinners should not start, stop, or change vitamin K intake without medical guidance.
