Psoriasis and rosacea are both chronic inflammatory skin conditions that tend to be cyclical and that frequently benefit from formulations tailored specifically to the individual. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that accelerates skin cell turnover, causing the raised, scaly patches associated with the condition and affecting approximately 8 million Americans. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the face, characterized by persistent redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes papules, affecting more than 16 million Americans. Both conditions involve skin that is particularly sensitive to inactive ingredients in standard commercial products, which is why base selection and ingredient customization are especially important. Compounded psoriasis formulations commonly incorporate corticosteroids at customized concentrations, calcipotriene, coal tar preparations, salicylic acid and urea, with specific combinations and strengths determined by the prescribing provider based on psoriasis type, location and severity. Compounded rosacea formulations may include metronidazole, azelaic acid, ivermectin for demodex-associated presentations, niacinamide and brimonidine, prepared in bases specifically selected to minimize the risk of irritation to reactive skin. Pharmacy Solutions is a PCAB-accredited 503A compounding pharmacy that works with dermatologists nationwide to prepare individualized formulations for both conditions. The RX Skin Solutions line and EltaMD sunscreens are also available without a prescription and are formulated to be well tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin.
I had been struggling with my skin for a long time and felt like nothing off the shelf was working. Once my dermatologist connected me with Pharmacy Solutions, I finally had a plan that felt like it was made for me. The pharmacy team answered all of my questions and made the process simple.
I had been noticing real changes in my skin and honestly had no idea what to do about it. My provider prescribed a customized formulation through Pharmacy Solutions and took the time to explain what each ingredient actually does. It made the whole process feel approachable rather than overwhelming.
I had tried so many things over the years and nothing seemed to work for long. My dermatologist finally prescribed a compounded formula through Pharmacy Solutions that was actually built around my skin. The difference was noticeable and, for the first time, I felt like someone had actually looked at my situation rather than just handing me something off the shelf.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface, forming thick, scaly patches that can be itchy, uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Unlike conditions caused by bacteria or external irritants, psoriasis originates in the immune system. It tends to be cyclical, with periods of flare and remission, and can affect the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back and other areas. It is not contagious.
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the face, characterized by persistent redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes small bumps that resemble acne. It tends to affect fair-skinned adults, particularly women, though men who develop rosacea often experience more severe symptoms. Like psoriasis, rosacea is cyclical and can be worsened by a range of triggers including heat, sun exposure, alcohol, spicy foods, stress and certain skin care products.
Yes. Compounded formulations for psoriasis and rosacea typically contain prescription-strength active ingredients and require a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. Your dermatologist or other provider can evaluate your condition and determine whether a compounded formulation is appropriate for your situation.
Compounded psoriasis formulations may include corticosteroids at customized strengths to reduce inflammation and immune activity, calcipotriene which is a vitamin D analog that slows rapid skin cell production, coal tar preparations which have a long history of use in psoriasis care, salicylic acid for softening and lifting scale, and urea for moisturization and keratolytic support. The specific ingredients, concentrations and base are determined by the prescribing provider based on the patient’s psoriasis type, location and severity.
Compounded rosacea formulations may include metronidazole for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, azelaic acid which has been studied for redness and bumps associated with rosacea, ivermectin for formulations addressing the demodex mite component of some rosacea presentations, niacinamide for barrier support and redness reduction, and other anti-inflammatory agents at provider-specified concentrations. The base selection is particularly important for rosacea-prone skin, and compounding allows providers to choose bases that minimize the risk of irritation.
Both psoriasis and rosacea involve sensitive or reactive skin that can respond poorly to inactive ingredients in commercial products such as fragrances, preservatives, alcohols and certain emulsifiers. Compounding allows providers to prescribe formulations in bases that are specifically suited to compromised or reactive skin, and to adjust active ingredient concentrations in ways that commercial manufacturers cannot. Combining multiple actives into a single preparation also simplifies application and reduces the overall number of products needed.
Yes. Pharmacy Solutions carries the RX Skin Solutions line and EltaMD skin care products, both available without a prescription through the Pharmacy Solutions shop. EltaMD sunscreens are formulated to be well tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin types, which is particularly relevant for rosacea patients who need daily UV protection without risk of triggering a flare.
